When can work become optional?

When can work become optional?

Your FIRE number is the corpus that can pay yearly spend at a safe withdrawal rate.

How this number is built

Yearly spend at retirement, divided by your withdrawal rate. Then we add a tax haircut, extra years as a safety sleeve, and a separate emergency cash pile. Healthcare is inflated faster than the rest of life, because that is how India usually works.

1. You

Ages

15 years to save, then 45 years the money must last.

2. Life cost

What must the corpus pay?

Rent or EMI, food, school, fuel, help at home. Do not include SIPs. Those are savings, not spend.

Retirement lifestyle

Same as today. Lean and Fat scale the monthly number you typed. Custom leaves it as-is.

This slice grows at the healthcare inflation rate.

3. Fuel

What you already have, and what you add

Mutual funds, shares, PPF, NPS, EPF if you will actually use them. Skip the house you will live in.

Used only to show your savings rate. Early FIRE often needs 40% to 70% of take-home going to investments.

4. Mix

Where the money sits

We map the mix to long-term guesses: equity 12%, gold 10%, debt 7%. After retirement the assumed return drops by about 3 points, because a safer mix is usual.

You can type over this if you disagree with the mix.

Return after FIRE

7.5%

Lower, because the mix usually gets safer.

Safe withdrawal rate

3.5% means you need about 28.6 times yearly spend. 4% means 25 times. Lower is safer for a long Indian retirement.

Your FIRE picture

₹3.75 Cr still to build

Raise SIP to about ₹98,567 a month (with your 10% step-up), delay FIRE, or trim spend. A 25% savings rate is solid, but may need more time.

Corpus vs the moving target

The dashed line is the invested corpus you need at that age. When the solid line stays above it, work can be optional. After the FIRE age, the solid line is withdrawals at post-FIRE returns.

Before you quit

Health insurance first, then the withdrawal plan

A 3.5% SWR is a planning rate. In a bad market year, spend from cash and debt, not from crashing equity.

Planning picture only, not advice. Returns, inflation, tax, and life will not be a straight line. Use this to set a target, then review it every year.
